Have you ever attempted to open a document and it ended up opening in a computer default program you didn’t want to use, or likely never even use? This happens often and can be pretty frustrating, so we are glad that Windows 10 has made it possible and easy for you to change the default application for your organization’s file types. Let’s walk through exactly how this can be done on your computer.

In order to change the default apps on Windows 10, follow these steps:

  • First, click on the Start menu in the bottom left corner of your screen, then click on settings, which is the option with a gear symbol next to it.
  • Select the “System” selection.
  • Click on “Default apps.”

Based on different categories, such as Email, Maps, Music Player, Video Player, Web Browser, and Photo Viewer, you can change which application you would like to be the default. This means that any files you open will be displayed in the default application of your choosing.

If this ever varies and using the default setting doesn’t work, you can right-click the file you are wanting to open and click “Open with” and click the application of your choosing.

You are also able to reset all of your default apps, in case something gets messed up with the ones you selected, or you would like to restore them to the default Windows Applications. You can do this by:

  • Clicking on the Start menu in the bottom left corner of your screen, then clicking on the Settings option (the one with the gear symbol).
  • Find the “System” selection and once inside, click “Default apps” and click the reset button which will be at the bottom of this page.

Changing the Default Apps In Windows 10 is a very simple task that will make using your computer more personalized and less time-consuming. For more tricks and tips, always come back to MyTek’s blog.
