Employee Monitoring – Are You Crossing The Line? We Can Help

Employee monitoring can seem like such an awkward and divisive topic. As an authority figure on your team, it is pretty important that you are keeping your team on track, and keeping them diligent while they are at work (or while they are working remotely). But, we understand there are some major lines that can be crossed. Today, we’re going to talk about employee monitoring and how you can keep things civil while keeping your team on track.

Monitoring Your Team Without Even Telling Them

Don’t. We repeat, don’t do this! You can’t monitor your team without telling them and obtaining their consent. This is not only illegal but also invasive and a terrible thing to do to a team that trusts you. Unless you have a valid or serious suspicion or reason to suspect that an employee might be acting out and you are investigating, you should never use monitoring software without their knowledge.

You should always be transparent with your team so they know that their systems will be monitored, what exactly is monitored, and why they are being monitored. This transparency is very important so that your employees feel comfortable and secure while they are working.

Monitoring Your Team, Outside of Work

While it is more simple to monitor your team’s activity within the workplace, remote working has made this task a lot more difficult, especially if your employees will be using their own devices for work. Even if they are using work devices, who is to say that your team member might not use these devices for personal use once the workday is over, even if on accident? This means that you might accidentally capture bank account credentials or other important information, which can get you in trouble. You should either tell your employees not to use their work devices for anything personal or give them the accessibility to turn off this monitoring system when they are done working.

Why Monitor?

If you are wanting to monitor your team, you will need a valid reason. Monitoring might be used to collect information and stats, or maybe to identify leaks. But, you will need to be upfront about the reason you are monitoring their activity, and if you can’t come up with one, you should probably reconsider monitoring them at all. If you don’t have a goal in mind, you shouldn’t be doing it.
