Tip of the Week: When Do I Need to Clean My Computer?

Your employees need resources so they can go about their days and do all the work they need to do. But, beyond needing resources, their resources also need to be in the best condition possible. Here is how to clean a computer so your workstation is ready to go and can be used to its best ability.

What Difference Does a Clean Workstation Make?

A clean workstation changes more than you might think. A computer can honestly get pretty gross if it isn’t maintained properly.

Not only will the computer look better if it is cleaned properly, but it will actually help it work better. It will help control its temperature and can even prevent germs from spreading. It is really important that you keep your workstation clean so it works right.

How Often Should I Clean My Workstation?

Here are some variables that might mean you have to clean your workstation more often than not:

  • An industrial or heavy-duty environment
  • The presence of pets nearby
  • Carpeting nearby
  • If children use the computer
  • …and numerous other factors might increase the frequency and way that a computer should be cleaned.

Has it been over a year since a computer has been cleaned? Well, it’s time.

Properly Cleaning Your Workstation’s Components

Different parts of the workstation should be cleaned differently, so here are a few guidelines we recommend:

  • Do not spray any liquid directly into your computer. Spray a cloth with liquid and wipe with it instead.
  • Do not use a vacuum on your computer, as it can create a damaging static charge inside. Use compressed air instead to blow away any debris in the system.
  • Don’t allow fans to spin freely as you are cleaning them, as it could actually damage them in the long run.
  • Always turn off your computer before you start to clean it.

The Case

You should clean your computer’s case so that it can help with airflow and make the appearance look better. Use a lint-free cloth to wipe down the exterior of the case to minimize dust buildup.

The Interior

Keep the inside of your case clean to help reduce the temperature and to benefit the way it operates. Compressed air cans can help you clear out the debris without risking any damage to the internal components.

The Peripherals

There are many benefits to cleaning, such as cleaning everything that comes with it. This includes the keyboard, mouse and anything else with compressed air or diluted rubbing alcohol.
